Online Chat Etiquette: Respectful Messages and Clear Boundaries
Good chat etiquette is not about sounding formal. It is about making room for other people, respecting boundaries, and keeping shared spaces readable.
In public rooms, contribute instead of flooding
Send one complete thought and give people time to answer. Repeating the same greeting, posting many short fragments, or demanding replies makes the room harder to follow. If a discussion is moving quickly, reply to the relevant message so context stays clear.
Do not treat online status as consent
An online indicator means the service currently sees an active connection. The person may be reading, away from the screen, or talking elsewhere. One polite private message is enough; repeated messages after silence are pressure, not persistence.
Disagree with the idea, not the person
Ask what someone means before assuming the worst. Avoid insults, discriminatory language, threats, and attempts to recruit others into a pile-on. If a discussion is no longer useful, leave it instead of trying to win the last word.
Keep contact exchanges off the platform
Funchat blocks external links, phone-style contact details, email addresses, and social-media handles. This boundary reduces spam and keeps early conversations inside the moderated service. Repeated attempts can trigger warnings, a temporary mute, and a ban.
Use moderation controls proportionately
Mute when you personally do not want to see someone’s messages. Report when content may break the Community Guidelines and needs administrator review. Do not threaten people with reports as a way to control ordinary disagreement.
- Be patient with response time
- Avoid spam and repeated private messages
- Respect a direct no or a silent boundary
- Use reply context and readable messages
- Mute or report without escalating the conflict
